Your insurance card is very important to keep in your glove box. When your renewal comes in the mail, make it a priority to go right then and put the new card in the vehicle.
What is on an ID Card?
The most important details on the front of your card will tell you the carrier you are with, the name of the primary policyholder, your policy number, the covered vehicle, & the effective dates of the policy. This information is important whether you are pulled over, in an accident, or need roadside assistance. In the state of Tennessee it is illegal to drive without insurance, so having the evidence with you in the vehicle at all times saves you having to go to court or mail in evidence later.
A driver on my policy isn’t listed
Not every driver is listed on the ID Card. Typically just the first named insured will be listed. Some times, if the policy has a second named insured (typically a spouse) their name may also be listed. However, that doesn’t mean if your child isn’t listed on the card, that they aren’t covered. Your declarations page is the full and complete details of your policy. It will show things like all listed drivers, amount of coverage, and the premiums you pay. The ID card is merely a snap shot of the details you need while out on the road and evidence that the vehicle itself is insured.
Additional details on the back
The back of your ID card will often have important numbers and addresses. The number to the claims department will be listed should you need to file a claim at any time. Most have 24/7 availbility, so you are able to call it in at your convenience.
